Who for:- People who have little or no experience of reading maps
and using compasses and who wish to gain more knowledge and skills when navigating
on land.
This course provides the ideal preparation for the National Navigation Award Scheme
Bronze assessment.
The course is held in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere
to encourage maximum learning. If you are serious about improving your navigation
skills, you like the great outdoors, especially on the hills, and having fun, then
this is the course for you.
What will be covered:-
- Understanding the nature of a map as a two-dimensional plan, map legends and interpreting
map detail and relief including scales.
- Using landforms and contours as an aid to navigation.
- Practical use of Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 maps.
- Obtaining and plotting grid references and calculating magnetic variation.
- Understanding grid and magnetic bearings, plotting and reading bearings.
- Using a magnetic compass confidently.
- Orientating the map to the ground with and without the use of a compass.
- Planning routes and using route cards as an aid to navigation.
- Selecting handrails and escape routes.
- Procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency.
- Introduction to the Countryside Code, access rights and responsibilities.
Method:- A mixture of indoor and outdoor exercises.
Terrain:- 2 - 4 kilometres over semi rough open moorland.
Equipment:- All navigational equipment is provided. Participants will
need to bring suitable
clothing and footwear for outdoor work. (see
recommended clothing list).
Catering:- Tea, coffee and lunch provided.
