Who for:- Have you become a little rusty, been unable to practice or just plain
forgot? ‘Yes’ – then this course is just right for you. Especially for those people
who have completed one of our Navigator Level 1 courses or have reached an equivalent
standard and would like to increase their working knowledge.
The best way to enhance your map and compass skills is to actually get out into the
“Great Outdoors” and use them! The Compassworks team have designed this totally
outdoor, relaxed fun day, with an Instructor on hand, to iron out any problems you
may have. It will be a great opportunity to discuss with others the techniques involved
whilst navigating.
What will be covered:-
- Orientating the map to match the ground.
- Understanding the nature of a map as a two dimensional plan.
- Navigating using handrails.
- Obtaining and plotting grid references
- Understanding grid and magnetic bearings
- Using the lightweight compass to navigate on magnetic bearings.
- Contours and simple line features.
- Route planning.
- Walking safely.
- Any other queries that participants may have
Method:- A totally outdoor day of practical exercises.
Terrain:- 6 - 8 kilometres over semi rough open moorland, at various locations
on Dartmoor.
Equipment:- All navigational equipment is provided. Participants will need to bring
suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor work.
Catering:- Please bring your own packed lunch and drinks.
Price:- £30 per person with a minimum of 4 participants.
