How long:-             1 day   (0930  - 1630).

 

Who for:-                The event will primarily focus on gaining a better understanding of the

                                  characteristics and use of a Garmin hand held GPS receiver. At the end of the

                                  event participants will have gained more knowledge, skills and confidence about

                                  using GPS receivers generally and be able to use a GPS receiver to maximum

                                  advantage for either navigation or developing personal navigational skills.

 

                                  Participants will be provided with the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx for the day.

                                  However, there will be an opportunity to discuss and handle other GPS receivers

                                  in the Garmin range.

 

                                  This course is held in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere to encourage maximum

                                   learning.

 

What will be covered:-

 

• An overview of the GPS system and how it works.

 

• Main function buttons and accessories.    

 

• Acquiring satellite signals.

 

• Overview of Satellite, navigation, map, trip computer and main menu pages.

 

• Setting up the GPS receiver for use at home (and abroad).

 

• Inputting waypoints and making up routes.

 

• Finding locations using the “GoTo” function.

 

• Setting up and using the Trip computer and Track log as a performance review tool.

 

• Navigating with your GPS.

 

• An Introduction to Geocaching.

 

Method:                  A mixture of indoor and outdoor activities and practical exercises.

 

Terrain:                   2 - 4 kilometres local on road and open moorland.

 

Equipment:            Participants will need to bring suitable clothing  and footwear for outdoor work.
